I grew up With a mom that had a great sense of style a great sense of color adventure in her art even if she was controlled by the forces around her to do the practical stuff first. She knew art was important it was important for expression for full living.
We didn’t have dolls to play with but we had an art room filled with paint sets with hundreds of colors in them glue scissors string lace paint easels materials of all sizes and shapes and colors and textures.
We were soon On our own and Living as cheaply as possible meant some pretty ugly surroundings. Necessity being the mother of invention Got is going at an early age. There is free furniture on the side of the road to pick up and repair and paint and make beautiful making little pillows to go over things that weren’t perfect painting walls creating a world where we got to see what was beautiful.
Going to my grandmothers in the summers from the city was always fun mushroom picking hiking swimming fishing and doing creative things with your hands she taught us how to embroider knit and crochet. We would spend summer days sweeping out the tool shed and making it into our own fabulous clubhouse. We were given lots of costume jewelry from the woman that she worked from and from people in the neighborhood and we made beaded curtains we saved up green stamps and bought plastic chairs and tables and we would do our artwork. And keep working on our shed renovation. We eventually moved in with her. I started making my own clothes. There were no clothing stores like I was used to in the city and the ones that were there were either expensive or rather cheap.
I’m embarrassed to say that my taste came from Veronica’s closet. I’m talking about Archie comic books. Cute short Jean jackets and matching shorts I guess hot pants! We ended up moving to Aston magna which was the Summerholme of a baroque music foundation. The landlord impressed with what we could do with paint and carpet in our sense of style asked us if we would be interested in helping him ran out certain outbuildings and do repairs and upgrades. I think I was 16 at that point I remember going to University of Connecticut had a summer class in color theory I believe I was 14? I just remember always being happy to learn about materials and theory but not as interested in art history. I always wanted my art to be my art to not have it be someone else’s that got stuck somewhere in my mind.
So I always did art but I have to say never wanted to be called an artist one because artists were usually poor and I didn’t want that.
Dreaming and redecorating and looking at peoples homes and using the resources that we had to make things look the best many times rearranging and rearranging and rearranging till we got it just right.
The man who owned the Mahaiwer theater in town AL Schwartz became the property manager at Aston manga and we started working for al at the theatre as well, Making signs and posters for different things at the theater.
